about

The Balkan Incentive Fund for Culture is a grant scheme for cross-border cultural collaboration in the Western Balkans. The BIFC Regional Hub, based in Ljubljana, provides advice to project applicants on the application criteria and application forms, and helps to find partner organisations.

The BIFC is run by the European Cultural Foundation and finances projects of collaboration among cultural organisations from the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo), and their collaboration with organisations in the rest of Europe, provided that the project, in terms of content and organisation, is based in the Balkans. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Both awarded and rejected applicants will receive an answer by e-mail within four months. More about BIFC and BIFC Regional Hub.

"The idea that art and culture should be 'self-financing' or 'useful' is alien to the European, and especially Central European tradition of public funding of the arts." A Conversation with Mirko Petrić.

"The idea that art and culture should be 'self-financing' or 'useful' is alien to the European, and especially Central European tradition of public funding of the arts." A Conversation with Mirko Petrić.

We are sending you off into the new year with a conversation with the Croatian theorist Mirko Petrić prepared by Urška Jurman, as both a farewell to the old year and as a companion for reflections on the role of culture to accompany you into 2012. The conversation represents an important contribution to the current discussions regarding the debate about and the reasons for public support of culture. Mirko Petrić (born in Split, 1961) studied Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb, with study periods at Freie Universitaet Berlin and the University of Bologna. His work as a cultural journalist started back in the late 1970s and continues to this day. Since 2006, he has been lecturing at the Department of Sociology, University of Zadar, on cultural and media theories and methods. Petrić’s work also includes research in the field of cultural policy as well as his involvement in struggles for the preservation of cultural heritage and public space and the increased participation of the public in urban planning.
